Julián Cancino is committed to innovation, social justice, and diversity and inclusion in education. Julián is a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, where he co-founded Rising Immigrant Scholars Through Education and played a role in establishing a leading resource center for immigrant students. Most recently, Julián served as Manager of Community Engagement at GLBTQ Legal Advocates & Defenders (GLAD) in Boston. While at GLAD, he created, managed, and evaluated successful education programs and strategic partnerships at local and regional levels. In 2016, as a member of a bipartisan public policy advocacy coalition, Julián helped win a precedent-setting law protecting transgender people against discrimination in places of public accommodations. His commitment to social justice and civil rights has been recognized by the Level Playing Field Institute (LPFI), Liberty Hill Foundation, the Hispanic Black Gay Coalition (HBGC), and the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF). Born and raised in Chiapas, Mexico, Julián is fluent in Spanish, English, and Portuguese.
