Dr. P. Andrew (Andy) Karplus is Professor and Chair of the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics at Oregon State University, where he has taught since 1998. He first got exposed to the wonders of biochemistry as a student at U.C. Davis and went on to complete a Ph.D. in Biochemistry at the University of Washington. After four years of post-doctoral research as an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow in Freiburg, Germany, he took a faculty position at Cornell University where was for ten years. He has won a Guggenheim fellowship and the Pfizer award in Enzyme Chemistry. He teaches undergraduate and graduate classes and has contributed to over 100 peer-reviewed articles based on his research into what proteins look like and how they work. He live in Corvallis, Oregon with his wife of 29 years, Karen. They raised three children two of which attended Cal Poly.
