Rethinking Relationships

Topics: no topics
Summary: Growing up in a Baptist church, Miller left his faith because all he could get were How answers to his Why questions. He was taught Christian formulas that stole the beauty and mystery from a life with God, ultimately turning his back on God because he found his faith to be simple, silly, and stupid.
In this honest and autobiographical talk Miller leads his listeners through his rejection of God and Christianity, his “reawakening to beauty,” and way of following Christ through what he calls Christian Spirituality. Touching on topics such as identity, ethics, and the nature of story, Miller’s talk is full of insight, humor, and wisdom for all who have questions of God, faith, and life.

I think he does a good job of connecting with his post-modern generation audience with his "lets explore our beliefs" approach to his teaching. Unfortunately, he doesn't really offer them anything in terms of substance. His content was pretty fluffy. Furthermore, Mr. Miller doesn't seem sufficiently trained or knowledgable in the areas he is expousing -- namely, theology and philosophy. I am left with an uncertainty about how sure he believes in what he says he believes. He often says "it seems to me...." It seems to me... ; - ) that he doesn't want to appear dogmatic about his Christian assertions. However, if he is confident of what he says, he should say so. And if he is not confident in what he asserts to be true, then I ask, why does he write books and speak at major universities on these subjects?
From my understanding of Mr. Miller's views, he is more about leading people to question their beliefs, it doesn't seem that he's giving answers because those answers are for each person to find themselves - I believe if he attempted to answer those questions for his listeners then he would be interfering. In Christian and secular circles there are many people to tell us what to believe, and few, like Mr. Miller to lead us into discovering truth for ourselves - which in the end, the truth you discover yourself is the only truth that lasts. The substance he offers is to assert that questioning 'truth' is okay and in fact, a healthy direction to take towards understanding who we are in relation to eachother and in fact, who God is to us in true relationship. Mr. Miller speaks of the beauty of God, and reminds us to enjoy it - you can't get more substantial than that.
Think about it... our entire lives people have told us the "answers"... teachers, parents, clergy, etc., but most have not told us how to think for ourselves. The institution known as "church" has done a great disservice to the cause of Christ and the reality of relationship with Him, by subsituting others and their "answers" for Christ Himself. I appreciate Don Miller and his messages and appreciate the fact that he doesn't tell me, "Here, this is it, now believe this." but allows me much room to ponder and to bring my questions directly to the Lord. Ask and we shall find.
Postsript- I'd like to add to the beginning my above post, in the manner of Don Miller, "It seems to me..." :-)
