A Painter’s Personal Wager on Transcendence

Washington University, St. Louis

All human beings desire to mark time, to leave some record of having lived and loved and attempted to make meaning of their lives. And ever since the most ancient cave paintings, humans have been using visual art to express this search for meaning, and explore how they relate to the world around them. In his talk, artist Bruce Herman, sharing from his personal story, and drawing from the relationships within the Trinity, asks why we leave this colorful record of our presence, and considers what role a “wager on transcendence” plays in our marking of time.
