See me! Hear me!: A play on Modern Slavery’s Emotional Humbling of an Intellectual

Kathleen Thompson
Columbia University
23 September 2009
Write a book. Get tenure. That was the life goal of Gertrude Simmons, an Ivy League economics professor, as she embarked on researching entrepreneurship in global markets. When she discovers that one of the most lucrative entrepreneur markets is Human Slavery, her number-crunching intellect is forced to confront the human faces that loom behind the statistics. This is a jarring, surreal play about how a woman struggles to orient herself as the shrieking voice of human suffering drowns out all others.
