Truth Consequences and History
David Aikman
Harvard University
1 January 1994
David Aikman, a journalist who has covered stories across the world, has much experience dealing with truth. Noting (at the time of the talk) that America's greatest domestic political crisis — Watergate — was at its root an issue about truth, and describing how he was begged during the Tiananmen Square massacre by one Chinese protestor to tell the world the truth, Aikman claims that the desire to know and tell the truth transcends religion and culture. In this talk Aikman dives into history and philosophy using examples of authoritarian regimes, genocide, and the social upheaval of the 1960s to discuss the current casual treatment of truth in our culture and the implications of treating truth so lightly.
