Stephen Tuck

Stephen Tuck, University Lecturer in American History at Oxford gets under the surface of race relations, religion, Jim Crow, and the nature of history. His current project reveals that the religious character of the civil rights movement in America was surprising, given the philosophical tensions that had existed in previous decades.

Prof. Tuck received his Ph.D. from Cambridge University and served on the faculty there before moving to Oxford. He is the author of two prize-winning books in addition to several scholarly articles: Beyond Atlanta: the struggle for civil rights in Georgia, 1940-80 (Athens, 2003) and We Ain't What We Ought To Be: the black freedom struggle from emancipation to Obama (Cambridge, Mass, 2010. Forthcoming is Fog of War: World War II and race in America (New York: Oxford University Press, 2011).
