Ard Louis

Reader in Theoretical Physics, Oxford University

Dr. Ard Louis is a Reader in Theoretical Physics at the University of Oxford, where he leads an interdisciplinary research group studying problems on the border between chemistry, physics and biology. Current research focuses on self-assembly and the physics of evolutionary biology. He has written over 90 research publications. From 2002 to 2010, he was a Royal Society University Research Fellow. Prior to Oxford he taught Theoretical Chemistry at Cambridge University where he was also director of studies in Natural Sciences at Hughes Hall. He was born in the Netherlands, raised in Gabon, Central Africa, and received his Ph.D. in theoretical physics from Cornell University, U.S.A. Dr. Louis is the International Secretary for Christians in Science and an associate of the Faraday Institute for Science and Religion based at St. Edmunds College, University of Cambridge. He has also served on the European board of advisors for the John Templeton Foundation. He maintains an active interest in international development issues, and is, for example, a director of Arca Partners and the patron of the African Areopagos society based in Mukono, Uganda. He is also passionate about helping postgraduate students think Biblically about the world around them. He is a trustee of the Oxford Pastorate, on the council of advisors for the Oxford Graduate Christian Union and teaches on the Oxford Christian Mind course.
